TENT SIZE RECOMMENDATION FOR MOTORCYCLE OVERLANDING
Deciding on the right size tent for your adventure
One of our favourite forms of adventure travel is on a two wheeled beauty, lapping up all the elements of the world as the scenery bimbles by! Having an engine gives you a bit more opportunity to carry a more sizeable tent than if you were to be hiking or cycling, however, you still have to be reasonably conscious of size as you will be carrying spares and extras as part of your kit. We’ve seen a lot of motorcycle overlanders completely loaded to the max… this makes for uncomfortable riding! Opting for a tent which is a size larger than the number of people in your party offers you great space for your gear and a comfortable camping experience.
No of People
Tent Size Recommendation
1 Person Tent (with large vestibules) or a 2 Person Tent
2 Person Tent (with large vestibules) or a 3 Person Tent (with vestibules)
4 Person Tent (with large vestibule) or 5 Person Tent (with vestibules)
With this form of travel we would recommend splitting up the party into smaller groups and having more than one tent.
WHICH SEASON TENT FOR MOTORCYCLE OVERLANDING
A relaxing space to keep you warm and dry
Depending on the location and time of year you’re looking at motorcycling ultimately affects which season tent would be ideal for you. A decent 3 season tent would be more than suitable for temperate weather systems (a bit of rain and shine here and there and some blustery weather conditions and light snow but not mega storm weather). For more extreme weather conditions, including heavy snow, high winds and extreme wet weather a 4 season tent would be more suitable.
WHICH STYLE TENT FOR MOTORCYCLE OVERLANDING
Deciding on the right style tent for your adventure
There are some fantastically designed tents, actually designed for cycling but also useful for us motorcyclists. They offer an extended built vestibule area which is great for storing your luggage and equipment and giving you a fantastic space for hanging wet jackets and big boots to dry out. This area also gives you the chance of a nice semi-outdoor living space if the weather is a bit naff but you fancy kicking back and relaxing with the door open!
Otherwise, an optimised symmetrical geometric, geodesic or semi-geodesic tents are among the most sought after tent shape for this kind of adventure. With an excellent build made up of poles which interlock and cross over it gives fantastic stability. They offer a comfortable camping experience, great head and floor space area and yet a well designed one will not weigh much more than a domed tent and pack up nice and small. Normally two walled, in warmer weathers you can remove your fly sheet to keep cool.
