INTERNATIONAL DRIVING PERMITS (IDP)

Worldwide Recognised driving permit

The International Driving Permit (IDP) is recognised worldwide in over 140 countries and is required or recommended to have when driving in most overseas countries.  It’s an official, multi-language translation of your UK drivers licence, which you must have with you also at all times to make sure it is valid!

Which Countries do I need them in?

You can find an up to date list of countries on the AA website below:

AA IDP Country List

How long does it last?

Once issued, they last for up to 12months. If you are travelling longer you will need to apply for an new one before your other runs out! Be aware - these cannot be purchased retrospectively! However, you can organise them up to 3 months in advance of your journey!

Where can I get one and how long does it take to receive it?

If you are a UK national with a Full UK driving Licence, you can either organise them through the Post Office, RAC or AA.

Post Office*
Applying via the Post Office is probably one of the quickest ways for you to pick up a IDP as they issue it there and then. Be sure to check the Post Office Branch Finder and select IDP service before popping to your local jut in case they do not do it! You may have to go to a larger branch instead! What you will ordinarily need for an application is:

  1. Yourself (and to be 18 or over and a UK national)! Unfortunately a third party cannot apply on your behalf.

  2. A Valid Full UK Driving Licence and a Photocopy. If you have just passed your test though, you can can still apply, just be sure to bring your original Provisional Driving Licence and your Pass Certificate (along with photocopies of both!). If you have lost your Licence, you can pay an additional fee of approximately £4 for them to do a search to validate your Licence.

  3. A Passport Photo, Signed on the Rear. Follow standard passport photo rules when having your picture taken!

  4. Your Passport and a Photocopy on the inside photo page.

  5. Approx £5.50

RAC or AA Online Applications*

Applying via the RAC or AA online is a few more pounds than popping to the Post Office but if the Post Office isn't a viable option for you this is a great way to arrange your IDP. Ordinarily, if all your paperwork is in line, when your application is received by the RAC or AA they expect to get your IDP sent back to you within 14 days! Items you will need to pop in the post:

  1. A Photocopy of your Valid Full UK Driving Licence (No originals!). If you have just passed your test though, you can can still apply, just send in a photocopy of your Provisional Driving Licence and your Pass Certificate. If you have lost your Licence, you can pay an additional fee of approximately £4 for them to do a search to validate your Licence.

  2. A Passport Photo, Signed on the Rear. Follow standard passport photo rules when having your picture taken!

  3. A Photocopy of your Passport (inside photo page) (No originals!)

  4. Approx £8.50

  5. A Completed Application Form. You can download them here:

  6. A Self Addressed Envelope (with postage attached). No postage is required, however, if you decide to opt for your IDP to be tracked/ sent overseas or couriered over seas (see below, but you will still need to include a self addressed envelope!)

Additional Costs / Options when applying through the RAC or AA:

  1. To send your IDP by UK Royal Mail Tracked : Approx £7.00 extra

  2. To send your IDP overseas : Approx £7.00 extra

  3. To courier your IDP overseas : Approx £27.00 extra

  4. To fast track your IDP to a UK address (approx 5 working days from receipt of your application) : £4.00

International Driving Permit Overview:

At under £10 per permit, they’re not an expensive out lay for peace of mind when travelling and also a legal requirement in many countries! You may incur a hefty fine or an even worse penalty if you travel through a country where it is required and you do not have one! Remember, it is ONLY legal when paired with your valid Full UK Driving Licence!
